| Sat May 8 | The Paul Bailey Ensemble The evening will include the premiere of a four-movement extended choral piece, Retrace our Steps, commissioned by the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. Based on a variety of texts by Gertrude Stein, Guy Debord, and Jenny Bitner, the work explores the relationships between youthful idealism, consumerism and job security. Mezzo-soprano Nicole Baker, who serves on the faculty at Cal State Fullerton, will be featured in the work. Another Paul Bailey work on the program, Summerland, juxtaposes popular song forms and harmonies against post-modern and minimalist gestures. Chopping Tool, by Sean Ferguson, reconstitutes the harmonies of a Chopin Piano Prelude through an agro-minimalist machine. The eclectic nine-member Paul Bailey Ensemble (2 violins, cello, electric guitar, electric bass, synthesizer, vibraphone, bass clarinet and trombone) brings together musicians from the rock and classical worlds. Members perform with a variety of local professional organizations, ranging from the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra to the Pacific Symphony and the Los Angeles Opera |
